Nilgiri Chilappan

Many of the plants and animals found in the Nilgiris are endemic, existing nowhere else on Earth. Among them is the Nilgiri Chilappan Montecincla cachinnans – a species of laughingthrush that has evolved in isolation for over five million years and is inseparable from its Sky Island home. Found in the high-elevation shola forests of the Nilgiris, the bird makes its presence felt through calls that echo across the mist-laden valleys. Here, a pair feeds on the wild tobacco flower Lobelia nicotianifolia.
