North Bengal Bonfire

Sandipan Chatterjee, May 2008, North Bengal – Bonfire: North Bengal is ablaze with forest fires, almost entirely set by humans either to clear forests for planting, or to access fuel for small brick kilns, or to make charcoal for home stoves. The government turns a blind eye to this suicidal trend, choosing to lavish their attention on regulating fossil fuels, even as forests across India – the only real means we have of countering climate change – go up in bonfire smoke, for one reason or other.
