A wide swathe of water cuts across a shola grassland, reflecting serene skies in the Eravikulam National Park, Kerala. A shola is the local name for patches of stunted tropical montane forest found in valleys amid rolling grasslands in the higher regions of South India, largely in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. These shola forests occur mainly in valleys and are typically separated by undulating montane grasslands, together forming the unique shola-grassland mosaic.
