Life On The Line
Dangling precariously on a finer-than-hair line of webbing in Karkala’s forests are crane flies, which look, for all practical purposes, like large mosquitoes with long, delicate legs. Much of their lives are spent in a larval state in both dry and wet habitats, where they survive on living and decomposing plant matter. Females can mate as soon as they pupate and deposit their eggs in wet soil, algae or, sometimes, just air-drop them on the wing.
