MASTERS OF DECEPTION

Noticing a monitor lizard approaching their eggs, a pair of Red-wattled Lapwings spring into action, one of them feigning a “broken-wing” to appear as easier prey. This broken-wing display tactic distracts predators from young ones or eggs, and if it fails, the bird will execute an aerial swoop attack. In this event, however, the photographer witnessed a 20-minute encounter, after which the lizard backed away and vanished into the woods.
