Tundra Swan

In early 2021, the Tundra Swan Cygnus columbianus bewickii was spotted in Hokersar, the first record in 80 years in Kashmir. A flock of four birds was initially sighted in November 2020. Unfortunately, two of them fell prey to poachers. After a dedicated search, the other pair was located by a team from the wetland division at Hokersar. As its common name suggests, the Tundra Swan breeds in the tundra of the Arctic and subarctic, where it inhabits shallow pools, lakes and rivers. It can be identified easily because of its large size, unmistakable black and yellow beak, and its habit of constantly pedalling in water while moving forward.
