Grey And Mighty

Grey And Mighty

Kaziranga conjures images of vast grasslands that support rhinos, wild buffaloes, elephants and, with luck, perhaps a tiger. But scan the trees or an open post near a waterbody and one might see the Grey-headed Fish Eagle Haliaeetus ichthyaetus. A handsome and powerful predator that feeds of the fish-buffet on offer in the waters of the many bheels that pepper Kaziranga, it can be easily seen across Assam. This avian is listed as threatened in the IUCN Red List, largely because of habitat loss, degradation of waterbodies, overfishing, and loss of nesting sites.
