The Indian wolf is an iconic species of India’s grasslands. The Indian grey wolf Canis lupus pallipes, with an estimated wild population of 2,000-3,100, is classified as Vulnerable and listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act. Found across the semi-arid grasslands of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, this elusive predator is a keystone species, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of grassland ecosystems by regulating prey populations and keeping these landscapes ecologically healthy.
