Mottled Wood-Owl

Mottled Wood-Owl: Woodland duet.

The Mottled Wood-Owl Strix ocellata is a beautifully patterned orange and grey owl endemic to India. Its call is a distinctive strange chihuahua-aa, the last note delivered with a prominent quaver. The male and female of the species render an antiphonal duet, the male’s call following the female’s! This pair photographed in the Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, presents a gorgeous portrait against the autumnal leaves in the background. As with so many other owls, unfortunately, the Mottled Wood-Owl too is persecuted in parts of India.
