A vital carbon sink

The forests of the Western Ghats are efficient in removing colossal amounts of carbon from the atmosphere, a process crucial in the mitigation of climate change. If well protected, these forests have the capacity to sequester large amounts of carbon. But if approved, HARP will result in the felling of around two lakh trees from 595.64 hectares (ha.) of forest, releasing tonnes of carbon likely stored over hundreds of years into the air.
