The Black-necked Crane Grus nigricollis is designated as vulnerable by the IUCN, with a population estimate of only 8,000-11,000 individuals. This is the only high-altitude alpine crane species in the world. Ladakhi people revere these exquisite birds on account of their elaborate mating rituals and the fact that they mate for life.
