Looking towards the heavens
The starry-eyed Ghat tree frog Ghatixalus asterops seems to contemplate life as it gazes out of its intricately patterned eyes. The species is found near montane streams – it hides in water for minutes when disturbed, an unusual characteristic since rhacophorid tree frogs usually stay away from water except during mating season. It prefers terrestrial habitat, such as grass patches, rock patches, leaf litter, and shrubs. In late summer, August to September, male calling generally occurs after 6:00 p.m. Calls consist of a series of five to seven whistle-like notes, repeated every two to three minutes.            Photo: Sandeep Das.
