Maha Guns

For most pilgrims of the Amarnath Yatra, the Maha Guns (4,218 m.) is the most challenging stage of a trek that will lead them to the legendary Amarnath Cave. In midsummer, this pass is often snowbound, testing the physical resolve of even the most devoted pilgrim. A 32 km. trail leads from Chandanwari to the holy Amarnath Cave. After leaving Sheshnag, a steep climb over Maha Guns is required to enter the Sind watershed, which pilgrims negotiate with religious fervour. Since the pass remains snowbound till late summer, high winds and treacherous weather make conditions pretty hostile. Acclimatisation is mandatory before one embarks on this trail; especially for pilgrims from the plains.
